"There are a lot of gaps within our systems and resources. This needs to be fixed, however, we need 'in the meantime' solutions while we wait and work for change. Empowering each other through education and opportunities creates healthier communities for everyone."
OUR PROJECT
"CAPthe Gaps" is a Youth Leadership project focused on identifying and addressing disparities within the mental health and education systems. Through various strategies such as community mapping, research, training, empowerment activities, community service, and solution-based think tanks participants prepare for the next step of advocacy and awareness campaigns. Using media and expressive art forms to disseminate the knowledge gained during these processes, the goal is to advocate for change at both the community and policy levels to create a more equitable and inclusive environments for all.
CAP the Gaps, is currently funded by Elevate Youth California.
Lessons Learned
A Journey of Growth, Resilience, and Change
We didn’t realize the powerful and difficult lessons we were learning as a group.
We also didn’t anticipate that the systems would grow even more challenging. Looking back, our project has defined itself in three transformative phases:
January 27, 2025January 27, 2025January 27, 2025Moving Forward
With this renewed and shared vision, youth and mentors move into the future, utilizing and implementing the lessons learned into new creative ideas and a brighter hope for our community. Here are some of the concept and philosophies we will bring into the future work:
- Empowerment Through Shared Learning
While we work and wait for systemic change, contingency plans—our “in the meantime supports”—are essential for helping those who fall through the cracks. This requires empowering and training youth and community members, finding allies within systems, and building strong, supportive relationships. - Wellness and Growth as Core Values
The wellness of the team is everything and directly determines how effectively we can serve our communities. Supporting each other's wellness journeys, valuing individuals, and fostering open communication and conflict resolution are key. These practices not only lead to more productive and effective work but also foster better collaborations rooted in mutual respect. - Resilience in the Face of Struggles
Struggles may not always appear conventionally productive, but they provide invaluable lessons and cultivate resilience that allows us to move forward with greater strength and purpose. - Investing in Young Leaders
Working alongside youth as they grow into capable partners benefits not only the organization but also the youth themselves and the broader community. Their development creates a ripple effect of empowerment and positive change. - Harm Reduction Saves Lives
Honest, non-judgmental approaches that educate and empower individuals have proven to be more effective than many traditional strategies. These methods have saved countless young lives within our group and will remain central to our work.
Honestly, we wouldn’t change a thing. Every step of this journey and learning process had great value. What we will do, is take those lessons and we move forward with creativity, confidence, and hope for a stronger community.
We plan to continue the work! We realized that we weren’t done and that the community and landscape greatly changed over the course of the project. New assessments need to be done. We also want to incorporate what we have learned and have some very focused and attainable initiatives for the next phase.
